The Straw that Broke the Camel’s Back

  1. Hear this word that Yahuwah hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying,
  2. You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.
  3. Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
  4. Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing?
  5. Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him? shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all?
  6. Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and Yahuwah hath not done it?
  7. Surely Yahuwah will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
  8. The lion hath roared, who will not fear? Yahuwah hath spoken, who can but prophesy?
Amos 3:1-8

What may on the surface to appear as a totally senseless overreaction to a seemingly small insignificant matter, fails to understand fundamentally important issues of truth.  To illustrate, for example, there is a limit to how much straw, (which is actually only long yellow grass), a camel can carry on it’s back.  If you keep adding more and more straw, it will finally break the camel’s back.  When you are at the last straw you are finally angry and will not take any more.

The distinguishing favours of Yahuwah to us, if they do not restrain from sin, shall not exempt us from punishment.  They could not expect communion with Yahuwah unless they first sought peace with him.  Where there is no friendship, there can be no fellowship.  Yahuwah and man cannot walk together, except they are agreed.  Unless we seek his glory, we cannot walk with him.  Let us not presume on outward privileges, without special, sanctifying grace.

The threatenings of the word and providence of Yahuwah against the sin of man are certain and show that the judgments of Yahuwah are at hand.  Nor will Yahuwah remove the affliction he has sent, till it has done its work.  The evil of sin is from ourselves, it is our own doing, but the evil of trouble is from Yahuwah, and is his doing, whoever are the instruments.  This should engage us patiently to bear public troubles and to study to answer Yahuwah’s meaning in them.

Oh, the amazing stupidity of an unbelieving world of those who despise Yahuwah’s mercies.  Yahuwah would not have sent Amos to call Isreal to repentance if his grace was not still open to his people if they returned to him.
