Love is

1 Corinthians 13:4-11
New International Version (NIV)
  1.  Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
  2. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
  3. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
  4. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
  5. Love never fails.  But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
  6. For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
  7. but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.
  8. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.
The concept of love has been corrupted since the first rebellion.

Genesis 3:1-5
New International Version (NIV)
  1. Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.  He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
  2. The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
  3. but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”
  4. “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.
  5. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
However, the words of Paul have been inspired by the creator.  As we are all imperfect they can be a useful point of reference.
