Is Knowledge Beneficial?

Ephesians 1:18-19

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe according to the working of his mighty power,

To understand that all believers are called upon to increase their knowledge of God as he reveals himself is to understand the depth of God’s promise of glory and to personally know the power of the risen Christ.  It has been stated and believed by many educators even these days that 'ignorance is bliss'.  Actually meaning that, if one is unaware of an unpleasant fact or situation one cannot be troubled by it.  As a result, conferring that what one doesn't know won't hurt, has also been misconstrued into a false truism.  Nonetheless, without fail a lack of understanding will often leave us prey to being easily misled.  Complete and up-to-date knowledge is recognised as having immense power, which sadly is too often believed to be reserved for an elite few.

Education to the appropriate standard has both intellectual and economic value to the recipient.  Enlightenment through education encourages imagination, creativity, interest in attaining further understanding and knowledge.  It also may provide students with more opportunities for high-paying employment and offer better economic security.  Education that is of a rounded nature is an essential part of intellectual freedom, and one of its main value is improving how students view, their existence and participation in the world in which they must live and survive.  Because education is a social event for most people, it encourages sharing of ideas and experiences among students, which helps students become productive members of the community by instilling morals, ethics and community responsibility.

Without thoughtful educational structure, for example, some students would likely be unable to understand the benefits of volunteering their time and energy to benefit others.  Moreover, the educational process may also encourage students to be inquisitive, thereby gaining know how of self-motivational disciplines to educate themselves in researching additional subjects of interest or information.  It may also provide students with the opportunity to learn about many differing aspects of culture, including art, sports, maths, literature and history, so that students are confident and able to discover what interests them.  This will give them the basic building blocks needed to succeed throughout their later life.

Education comes in many forms, including trade apprenticeships and formal post-secondary education.  Both of these give the students the ability to improve their socioeconomic standing by giving them the tools and skills necessary to support themselves and their families.  This usually means sufficient funds and time, which should then lead to a reasonable quality of life.  Whilst many countries provide education for children to adolescents, parents may take a personal and keen interest on what and how much their children are learning away from their care.  The pursuit of knowledge should never cease and hopefully the type of education received in early life keeps burning long after they leave school.
